Steven Lendrum is the
primary practitioner at Health Aliveness and he specialises in the resolution
of the effects of trauma and the restoration of 'bodymind' wellbeing. The
effects of trauma can include anxiety, depression, difficulties in
relationship, problems with sleeping and flashbacks.
The causes of trauma can be many and varied
and may include childhood experiences that were less than optimal and may have
resulted in insecure or avoidant patterns of attachment rather than
secure. Perhaps the trauma has come about through separation or loss of a
loved one or maybe a car accident, drugs, domestic violence or the result of
bullying.
Through the process of therapy and/or groupwork, old habits and
ineffective ways of being can fall away and new
experiences of self confidence, emotional balance, vitality, presence and
connection with others may develop in their place.
Steven assists clients to transform their lives by reflecting with them
on their current experience, thoughts, feelings, actions and goals. The process
is organic and follows the process and needs of the client. While much of
the work involves conversation, sometimes transformation can be facilitated by
working more directly with a client's bodily experience.
Body oriented principles include noticing and
understanding 'non-verbal' communication such as body posture, patterns of
breath, skin tone, the state of the nervous system, emotional expression and
illnesses (or states of dis-ease). Applying body oriented principles can
be as simple as bringing awareness to posture and patterns of breathing.
If a person is feeling overwhelmed by feelings of anger or sadness it may be
useful to focus on how those feelings are experienced as sensation within the
body as a way of gaining perspective and resources. The therapy usually
focusses on strengths and resources as a foundation and from there will tend towards
learning how to move more freely and easily in life and to have more choice in
responding to various situations. In some cases particular exercises or
biodynamic massage techniques may be appropriate to support particular
movement. The therapy is consultative and works within a strong frame of
respect, confidentiality and ethics.
